The Elements

Today (while entering data on Centrum Vitamins) I learned a little more about two periodic elements.

Vanadium - was first discovered and called erythronium before being consider the same as chromium, and then later rediscovered under the name vanadium (after the Norse goddess of beauty Vanadis/Freya). Now, "erythronium" is the genus name of lilies.

Niobium - is the official IUPAC name for element 41. It was originally called Columbium (Cb), especially in the US, but was referred to as Niobium in Europe. In 1950, IUPAC accepted Niobium for Europe while accepting Tungsten for the US (instead of Wolfram that was used in Europe). Today, many US industries, metallurgists, metal societies, and the US Geologic Survey still use Columbium (so don't be confused!!).
